Six Eastport kitchen gardens will be open to the public on Sunday, August 19, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The rain date is set for Sunday, August 26, with the same time. The Eastport Kitchen Garden Tour has been coordinated by area gardeners who enjoy growing some of their own food for all sorts of reasons. Whether it’s the taste of a home-grown carrot, a tight budget, family tradition or a larger philosophical choice, it all comes down to having something delicious at the end of the day. The tour was inspired by World Kitchen Garden Day, an event started by the Maine-based nonprofit Kitchen Gardeners International, which has 24,000 people from 100 countries who are growing some of their own food and helping others to do the same.
The tour starts downtown at the Peavey Memorial Library located at the intersection of Water and Key streets. Maps are available at the library for a suggested donation of $3, which will benefit the library. Gardens run the gamut from pocket to extensive and incorporate a wide range of gardening techniques to inspire the beginner and the old-hand.
